Bourge Named Vice Chair, Department of Medicine

 Dr. Edward Abraham, Chair of Medicine, has appointed Robert C. Bourge, MD, Division Director of Cardiovascular Disease, as Vice Chair for Finance and Administration in the Department of Medicine effective July 1, 2008.   In this role, Dr. Bourge will oversee the continued development of comprehensive plans to address the financial issues faced by the Department of Medicine.  .

New Director of Division of Hematology/
Oncology

 Boris Pasche, MD, PhD, has been  appointed as the new Director of the Division of Hematology/Oncology and Associate Director for Translational Research in the Comprehensive Cancer Center effective September 1.  “Dr. Pasche is internationally recognized for his basic and clinical research on critically important issues relating to cancer risk and treatment,” said Edward Abraham, MD, chair of the Department of Medicine. “His work on the genetics and treatment of cancer will help our cancer center sustain its rankings as one of the nation’s best.”     

 
Bridges Appointed Interim Director of Rheumatology

 Dr. Edward Abraham, Chair of the Department of Medicine, has appointed Dr. Louis Bridges as Interim Director of the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology.    Dr. Bridges is a Professor of Medicine and Microbiology.  He received his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine and his PhD from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.  He was appointed to the faculty at UAB in 1991.   

Jason Morris Named Clerkship Director, DOM

Jason Morris, MD, Assistant Professor, General Internal Medicine, has been appointed as the new Clerkship director for the Department of Medicine.  Dr. Morris is a graduate of the UAB School of Medicine, completed residency training at UAB, and served as Chief Medical Resident at UAB.  He was appointed to the faculty as Assistant Professor in 2005.  “During his short tenure as a faculty member, both medical students and residents have already recognized him as a superb teacher,” said Gustavo Heudebert, MD, Vice Chair for Education.  An outstanding teacher and clinician, Dr. Morris has been recognized as a Top Ten Teacher in 2007 and 2008, and he received the C. Glenn Cobbs, MD  - Edwin A. Rutsky, MD Award For Clinical Excellence in 2008.

Roger White Named Director, Basic Science Section, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care.

Roger White, PhD has been appointed Director for the Basic Science Section of the division of Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care effective July 1, 2008.  Dr. White,  Associate Professor of  Medicine in the Vascular Biology and Hypertension Program of the Division of Cardiovascular Disease, received his PhD in physiology and biophysics from the    University of Illinois.  He completed a post-doctoral fellowship at UAB in the Vascular Biology and Hypertension Program and joined the UAB faculty in 1993.  As Director of the Basic Science Section, Dr. White will serve as an advocate for the faculty and staff in the Basic Science Section and will work with them to develop goals and implement plans that will support the growth and development of new research, education, and service programs in basic science.
