Welcome

The Division of Geographic Medicine was established in the Department of Medicine in 1988.  The Division has a unique focus and mission both in the Department and at UAB in that it bridges into international public health programs and issues.  The Division has a minimal clinical commitment at UAB and is primarily focused on laboratory and field-based research.   The primary mission of the Division is to conduct the highest quality, state of the art scientific and programmatic research on infectious diseases of worldwide significance.

Thematically the interests of the Division can be categorized into four programmatic areas: HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, and emerging infectious diseases.  In addition, the Division has expertise in clinical tropical medicine and runs a premier training program in this area.

The full-time faculty members currently have on-going collaborative clinical and research programs with hospitals and laboratories in Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Brazil, Peru, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Russia, China, Mongolia, Thailand, Rwanda, Zambia and the Caribbean basin.
