Projects: Indonesia
TB is the third major cause of mortality in Indonesia,
and ranks third on WHO’s list of high burden countries
(2000). The DOTS strategy implemented by the Indonesian
National TB Program (NTP) currently covers 86% of existing
health centers (HCs) with case finding, but has been able
to detect fewer than 10% of expected new cases. In Yogyakarta
Province in 1997-98, the case notification rate was only
10 per 100,000, half the national rate. It is thought that
hospitals detect many TB cases, estimated to be about 3
times as many as the HCs, but these hospital figures are
not included in the reporting system of the NTP.
In collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Tuberculosis
Association (KNCV), the TB Initiative will support the
Hospital DOTS and Linkage Project (HDL): Integration of
Hospitals in TB control in Yogyakarta. Public and private
hospitals in the province are being incorporated into the
National Tuberculosis Program’s DOTS strategy. A
referral system between health centers and hospitals has
been established, and a unified laboratory quality control
network
developed.
