The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology has a comprehensive clinical program related to diseases of the digestive tract and liver. Research interests include clinical and basic research programs in immunology and inflammatory bowel disease, the role of mucosal macrophages in host defense, the physiology and pathophysiology of gastric secretion, gastric mucosal damage, esophageal motility, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), hepatopulmonary syndrome, porphyria, Helicobacter pylori, intestinal manifestations of HIV, acute and chronic liver disease, viral hepatitis including Hepatitis C, and pancreatic and biliary disorders including acute and chronic pancreatitis.

The Division is composed of nineteen faculty active in the areas of teaching, patient care and research. Teaching responsibilities include daily interaction with fellows, residents and medical students in University Hospital, BVAMC, and The Kirklin Clinic. Inpatient, consultative, and outpatient services are provided by faculty at each of these facilities.  The Division has dedicated inpatient services for both gastroenterology and hepatology.
