I. Overall
Goals/Objectives of the Program:
To produce academic physicians that 1) are clinically
competent in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology, 2)
are capable of working in
a variety of settings, and 3) possess habits of life-long
learning to build upon their knowledge, skills, and
professionalism.
II. Prerequisite Education and/or
Residency Training Required for Acceptance Into Program:
Successful completion of accredited Internal Medicine
Residency Training Program
III. Duration of Training Program:
3 years
IV. Specific Responsibilities and
Duties/Requirements for Completion:
The Division of Gastroenterology and
Hepatology Fellowship Training Program at the University of
Alabama School of Medicine provides 2
years of clinical and 1 year of research
experience in gastroenterology/hepatology. The first year is
spent attaining clinical expertise in
GI/Liver disease. Second year fellows
obtain a MSPH focused on clinical investigation. In the third
year the fellow returns to clinical
experiences similar to the first year.
Fellows can compete for additional research time: 2 years of
research (VA Scholars Program or T-32
NIH-NRSA program) + 2 years of clinical
experience.
V. General
Structure:
The general structure of each year is as follows:
First Year: 3 Months
University Hospital GI Ward Service
2 Months University Hospital Hepatology Ward Service
3 Months University Hospital GI Consult Service
3 Months VA Endoscopy/Consult Service
1 Month Outpatient Procedure
Second Year: 12 Months – MSPH Program in Clinical
Research (UAB
School of Public Health)
Third Year: 7 Months VA Endoscopy/Consult
3 Months University Hospital (2 GI, 1 Hepatology) Ward Service
1 Month University Hospital GI Consult Service
1 Month Outpatient Procedure
Clinics:
The Kirklin Clinic – ½ day per week for 3 years
VA Clinic – ½ day per week for 3 years
Call: Every 9th
day
Vacation: Three (3) weeks per
