Michael Fallon, MD

Director, Clinical Research Program

Dr. Fallon conducts both translational & clinical research focusing on Vascular complications of  liver disease, portal hypertension, hepatopulmonary syndrome.  His collaborations at UAB include the Vascular Biology/Hypertension Program Center for Free Radical Biology, Gene Therapy Center, Cell Adhesion and Matrix Research Center, Pharmacology Department and with Liver Transplant program. Outside collaborations include the 6 participating transplant centers, the Cholangiocyte Biology program at Texas A&M University, the Vascular Biology program at the Medical College of Georgia, the Pulmonary Vascular Biology Program at The University of Colorado, and the Physiology Department at the University of South Alabama.

 

 

Alexandra Gutierrez, MD, MPH

Co-Director, IBD Research

Dr. Gutierrez's research interests include clinical research and development of new therapies for ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.  Dr. Gutierrez initiated the IBD Newsletter and collaborates with several departments at UAB including the Department of Surgery. She received her medical degree from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine   She completed her residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and completed a clinical research fellowship from Massachusetts General Hospital in Gastroenterology.  She also received a Masters Degree in Public Health/Clinical Effectiveness Program at Harvard School of Public Health. 

 

 

 

Moises Ilan Nevah-Rubin, MD

Co-Director, Hepatitis C Research & Education

 

Dr. Nevah's research interests include the treatment and development of new therapies and strategies for the management of Hepatitis C.  They also include the treatment of Hepatitis C in patients who are insulin resistant.  Dr. Nevah joined UAB in 2007, and is also managing the UAB Liver Center's Comprehensive Care Program for Hepatitis C.

 

 

 

 

Cindy Joiner, RN, MPH

Nurse Research Manager

 

Cindy completed her BA in Biology from West Virginia University, her Masters in Public Health from UAB and her BS in Nursing from UAB.  She is currently pursuing her PhD in Nursing.  Her nursing career began as a pediatric critical care nurse at Children's Hospital of Alabama.  She has 10 years of research experience.  Her interest in research began in pediatric infectious disease.  She has conducted clinical trials in rheumatology, gastroenterology, and hepatology.  She is a member of Southern Nursing Research Society, Sigma Theta Tau, American Public Health Association, and Association of Clinical Research Professionals.

 

 

 

John Manolakis II

Regulatory Coordinator

 

John is a graduate of UAB.  He has over 3 years of research experience at UAB.  His previous research experience includes basic science research in microbiology and oral biology.  He currently handles the initial study submissions (IRB) and all regulatory duties for the program.  He is a member of   Phi Alpha Theta, Regulatory Affairs Professional Society (RAPS) & the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP).  He is also currently pursuing a MBA at UAB. 

 

 

 

 

 

Felicia Todd

Research Financial Assistant

 

Felicia joined the research group in January 2008.   She is a graduate of Samford University. She is proficient in clinic trial billing & maintains the program's financial records.  Although new to research, she has been at UAB for the past 4 years, and has worked in Accounts Payable and Purchasing.  Felicia is a member of Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP).

 

 

 

 

 

 

Shannon Fagan, RN

Research Nurse Coordinator

 

Shannon graduated from UAB with a BS in Nursing in 2003.  She has been involved in clinical research for the past 5 years.  She has conducted research in immunology, rheumatology, advanced heart failure & pulmonary hypertension.  She is a member of ACRP.  Shannon has also been a staff nurse at St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham. 

 

 

 

 

Stacy Eddleman

Research Study Coordinator

 

Stacy has been a study coordinator at UAB for the past 2 years.  She has conducted research studies in Gastroenterology and Hepatology.  She is currently a member of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals, and a graduate of the University of Alabama.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

Wendy McCay, RN

Research Nurse Coordinator

 

Wendy joined the research program in June 2008.  She is a native of Birmingham.  She graduated from Auburn in 1994 with a degree in nursing.  She has spent most of her nursing career working with blood cancer patients, including first as a Bone Marrow Transplant nurse and then with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  Wendy is also a member of ACRP.

 

 

Toni Seay, MA

Research Study Coordinator

 

Toni is a graduate of University of Detroit Mercy, where she received both a Bachelor's degree and Master's degree.  She has been involved with clinical research at UAB (Gastroenterology and Hepatology) since 2006.  She also has previous research experience, from Wayne State University, where she worked in the Department of OB/GYN (1999-2006).  Toni is also a member of ACRP.

 

 

 

 

 

Tracey Gwaltney, NP

Nurse Practitioner

 

Tracey received a BS in Nursing in 1985.  She was active in clinical nursing from 1986-1997.  She also has been  clinical research nurse in the UAB Liver Center, since 1997 devoting time to clinical trials in patients with Hepatitis C.  She received a Master of Science in Nursing in December, 2007 and is now an Adult Nurse Practitioner at the Liver Center in Hepatology.  Tracey also coordinators the Liver Disease Support Group and Hepatitis C patient education class.

 

 

 

 

Pamela Smith, CRNP
