Helpful Hints for DOM Junior Faculty

  1. Find a Mentor – The Department of Medicine (DOM) Junior Faculty Mentoring Program was created provide junior faculty with the opportunity to learn and receive guidance from senior faculty and seasoned researchers in the areas of grantsmanship, funding opportunities and career development issues.
  2. Maintain Your CV – Keep it up-to-date in the required format.
  3. Create Portfolios – Begin immediately, as soon as you are “on board”, to create and maintain portfolios for teaching, research and service. Document concurrently everything that you do – all activities. The Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure (APT) “package” should be built over several years.
  4. Critique APT Package – Have your APT “package” critiqued by several faculty members prior to submitting to the DOM APT Committee. Incorporate changes as needed.
  5. Review Examples – Review examples of a good packet (blazerid required) and common mistakes.

Promotion Packet Common Mistakes

  • Forms not completed entirely
  • Correct information not on forms
  • Using the most currend (updated) form
  • Faculty Data Form (FDF) – don’t use faculty member’s social security number on this form. Use their employee ID number. Only use faculty member’s social security number if they are newly hired.
  • Letters of support (internal & external) must state rank and/or tenure status of faculty member.
  • CV – highlight faculty members name in list of authors.
  • Letter from Department Chair (usually written by Division Director)
    • Needs to be specific as to why supporting for promotion
    • Needs to be specific as to areas of excellence
    • Needs to be strong as to why this faculty member is ready for promotion/tenure
