The UAB Department of Medicine (DOM) is undergoing a reorganization process to strengthen its activities in its core missions of education, investigation, and clinical care, according to DOM Chair Edward Abraham, MD, Spencer Chair in Medical Science Leadership.

The U.S. News & World Report Magazine recently released its July issue with a listing of America’s Best Hospitals.  The nation’s top 50 hospitals in 16 categories evaluated at 4,861 US Hospitals are listed.  UAB Hospital was the only hospital in Alabama (or Mississippi) to rank high enough in even one specialty to make the magazine’s “Best Hospital” list.

Eight UAB Hospital specialty programs are among the nation’s top 50 and six out of the eight are affiliated with the Department of Medicine.  The 6 specialties from the DOM are :

• Rheumatology ranked 8^th (18^th consecutive year ranked)
• Kidney disorders ranked 13th
• Geriatrics ranked 16^th
• Respiratory disorders ranked 21^st
• Cancer ranked 23^rd
• Heart & Heart Surgery ranked 27^th

These rankings validate the quality of care we provide to our patients.  It is also a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our faculty.  Thank you for all you do to make our Department and institution successful.
